The Unitarian Church of Vancouver is a lively place offering a wide variety of events and activities sponsored by the church and by other organizations.

Ongoing Activities
Oak Street Farmers’ Market
Wednesdays 3–7 pm, June until January
(except for Christmas and New Year’s)
Church parking lot

Local organic farmers and other local producers sell a variety of products including: produce, meat, fish, bread, eggs, flowers and prepared food.

The rents collected from the farmers pay for advertising and for a part-time market manager. Surplus funds are donated to the church to support its ongoing community services.

The Oak Street Farmers’ Market Committee oversees the Oak Street Farmers’ Market on behalf of the Unitarian Church of Vancouver. The Market Committee members are dynamic and passionate about helping to build sustainable local food systems in Vancouver. For more information, or to become a volunteer at the market, please visit our website: www.oakstreetmarket.ca.

Pagan Group
Corina Bye and Renée Robert cochair the Pagan Group. They facilitate group meetings on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month.

Each session includes earth-based ritual to open and close the circle and a presentation or discussion on a topic related to our Unitarian Sixth Source, which honours the cycles of nature.

The History of the Daytimers
For forty seven years the Daytimers has been a program that has enabled seniors to stay connected and be generous contributors to UCV. When Wanda Justice was no longer able to keep the program organized she asked me to keep the program going. I was having my own problems with vision and hearing  so I turned to our minister. Rev. Steven Epperson went to the archives for help and found that the assistant to the minister, Clare Buckland, had set the program up with transportation assistance and during the following years two assistant ministers had provided support. He also found the Muriel Cunliffe fund which was to support seniors housing, if possible, or if that was not possible it was to be used for the continuing support of the Daytimers.

In 1980 some of us worked on a proposal for an Abbeyfield house over the parking lot. The building was designed and costed out by our Architect, Wolfgang Gerson. The congregation turned this proposal down and the interest rate went so high that social housing was no longer funded by the government.

Urgent need for drivers
We have applied for a grant from the Cunliffe fund for an hour a day phoning help from the office because transportation has become a major problem for us. Is there anyone out there who can help bring older seniors to the Daytimers on the second and fourth Thursday of the month and stay for our programs. We would welcome your program ideas.

Sacred Circle Dance
September to June, second Mondays of the month, 7 – 9 pm, Hewett Centre, by donation

Sometimes there are other events, including teachers from the US, UK or other parts of Canada.  More information is available by email.

Come and learn a variety of sacred circle dances. These are easy to learn and are more about spiritual practice and community building than about “right steps.” In fact, our mantra is: There are no wrong steps, only variations. Usually a group of 10 to 15, we meet in Hewett Centre and dance to recorded music.

Coordinators: Leslie Kemp, Mary Bennett, Karen Bartlett and Carolyn Grant
